Norwegian-American Essays

Innledende oversikt

Norwegian-American Essays er NAHA-Norges vitenskapelige publiseringskanal. Skriftserien publiserer fagfellevurderte artikler med hovedvekt på norskamerikansk historie og kultur, og har som formål å fremme ny forskning om historiske og kulturelle forbindelser mellom Norge og Amerika. Publikasjonen ble etablert i 1986, og den utgis hvert tredje år i trykt format. Fra 2025 utgis den også som Open Access.

Norwegian-American Essays har en historiefaglig kjerneprofil. Det er likevel åpent for bidrag fra andre fagtradisjoner, blant annet innen språk, litteratur, religionshistorie, migrasjonsstudier og kulturvitenskap. Det tradisjonelle tyngdepunktet har ligget på studier av norskamerikanske miljø i USA og Canada, med særlig vekt på kulturelle praksiser, språklige uttrykk, litteratur og identitet. Publikasjonen favner imidlertid bredt, og den åpner også for bidrag om relasjoner mellom Norge og andre deler av Amerika, deriblant Sør-Amerika, samt bidrag om økonomiske forbindelser, organisasjonsliv, turisme, misjon og andre former for transatlantisk kontakt.

Målgruppen for skriftserien er primært et akademisk publikum, nasjonalt og internasjonalt, men utgivelsen retter seg også mot allment interesserte lesere med engasjement for norskamerikansk migrasjonshistorie og kulturutveksling mellom Norge og Amerika. Publiseringsspråk er norsk og engelsk.

Norwegian-American Essays utgis i samarbeid mellom NAHA-Norge og Norsk utvandrermuseum / Anno museum. Den er fra 2025 tilgjengelig som Open Access gjennom Novus forlag.

Redaksjon

Norwegian-American Essays’ redaktør er Trond Espen T. Bjoland, Ph.d., historiker ved Norsk vegmuseum.

Skriftseriens redaksjonsråd skal støtte publikasjonens faglige og etiske utvikling. Redaksjonsrådet består av medlemmer med forskerkompetanse fra ulike vitenskapelige institusjoner og har som mål å være en arena for utveksling av ideer og vurderinger i tilknytning til publikasjonens videre utvikling, både med hensyn til innhold, kvalitet og publiseringsrutiner.

Redaksjonsrådet består av følgende medlemmer:

• Arnstein Hjelde, leder av NAHA-Norge og dosent ved Høgskolen i Østfold, Fakultet for lærerutdanninger og språk, Institutt for språk, litteratur og kultur.
• Terje Mikael Hasle Joranger, fag- og forskningsdirektør ved Norsk utvandrermuseum og professor ved Universitetet i Innlandet, Fakultet for lærerutdanning og pedagogikk, Institutt for samfunnsfag, religion og etikk.
• Nils Olav Østrem, professor ved Universitetet i Stavanger, Fakultet for utdanningsvitenskap og humaniora, Institutt for grunnskolelærerutdanning, idrett og spesialpedagogikk.

Alle medlemmer av redaksjonen og redaksjonsrådet er tilknyttet institusjoner som bedriver forskning og vitenskapelig publisering. Medlemmene er tilknyttet ulike og varierte institusjoner, for å sikre redaksjonell selvstendighet og uavhengighet.

Redaksjonen dekker følgende ansvarsområder:

• Gjennomgang av mottatte manuskript med hensyn til vitenskapelig kvalitet, originalitet og dokumentasjon.
• Organisering av fagfellevurdering og beslutning om aksept av manuskript.
• Utforming og løpende revisjon av retningslinjer for etikk, plagiat, opphavsrett og Open Access.
• Strategisk utvikling av publikasjonens profil, tematikk og publikasjonsplan.
• Redaksjonsrådet bistår med råd og innspill omkring publikasjonens faglige profil, etiske praksis og publiseringslogistikk.

Innsending av manuskript

Norwegian-American Essays tar imot vitenskapelige manuskript som presenterer nye innsikter innen norskamerikanske studier. Manuskript skal være utformet på en måte som gjør argumentasjon, metode og dokumentasjon etterprøvbare og anvendelige for videre forskning. Alle bidrag som vurderes for publisering må tilfredsstille etablerte krav til vitenskapelig kvalitet og forskningsetikk.

Publikasjonen praktiserer fagfellevurdering for alle vitenskapelige artikler. Forfattere oppfordres til å lese den fullstendige forfatterveiledningen før innsending. Veiledningen beskriver blant annet krav til format, referansestil, struktur og etikk.

Publisering i Norwegian-American Essays medfører ikke publiseringsavgift.

Rutiner for fagfellevurdering

Alle vitenskapelige manuskript gjennomgår en uavhengig og systematisk fagfellevurdering før eventuell publisering. Prosessen er utformet for å sikre høy vitenskapelig kvalitet, originalitet og forskningsetisk forsvarlighet.

1) Redaksjonell vurdering

Alle innsendte manuskript vurderes først av redaksjonen for å avklare om bidraget ligger innenfor publikasjonens faglige profil. Denne vurderingen skal også sikre at manuskriptet oppfyller grunnleggende krav til vitenskapelig form og dokumentasjon. Manuskript som går videre fra denne fasen sendes til fagfellevurdering.

2) Blind fagfellevurdering

Norwegian-American Essays praktiserer blind fagfellevurdering. Innsendte manuskript vurderes av to fagfeller med forskerkompetanse innen relevante fagområder. Fagfellene skal ikke ha bindinger eller interessekonflikter til forfatter(e), redaktøren eller utgiver. Fagfellene vurderer manuskriptets originale bidrag, metodiske grunnlag, teoretiske tilnærming, dokumentasjon, fremstilling og forskningsetikk.

3) Tilbakemelding og revisjon

Når fagfelleuttalelser foreligger, vurderer redaksjonen rapportene samlet. Fagfellenes vurderinger gjøres tilgjengelige for forfatterne. Dersom revisjon anbefales, får forfatterne anledning til å bearbeide manuskriptet og sende inn en revidert versjon. Redaktøren kan, ved behov, innhente ny vurdering fra fagfeller.

4) Redaksjonell beslutning

Basert på fagfellenes rapporter og redaksjonens vurdering kan manuskriptet få ett av tre utfall:

1. Refusjon: Manuskriptet vurderes som ikke egnet for publisering. Forfatterne mottar en begrunnet avgjørelse.
2. Omarbeidelse før ny vurdering: Manuskriptet anses som relevant og lovende, men krever endringer før det eventuelt kan publiseres.
3. Godkjent for publisering: Manuskriptet aksepteres, eventuelt etter mindre revisjoner.

Redaksjonen forplikter seg til å sikre en åpen, transparent og kvalitetssikret vurderingsprosess i tråd med internasjonale retningslinjer for fagfellevurdering.

Etikk og opphavsrett

Norwegian-American Essays følger etablerte internasjonale standarder for publiseringsetikk, slik de er formulert i anerkjente retningslinjer for vitenskapelig publisering. Skriftseriens etiske praksis er inspirert av prinsipper utviklet av The Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) og av retningslinjer benyttet av nordiske akademiske forlag.

Målet med publikasjonens etiske retningslinjer er å sikre integritet, transparens og rettferdig behandling for forfattere, fagfeller og lesere. Redaksjonen forventer at alle involverte parter opptrer i samsvar med grunnleggende prinsipper for forskningsetikk, redelighet og akademisk ansvarlighet.

Omtale av publikasjonens innhold:

The seventeenth volume of Norwegian-American Essays is published in the commemorative year marking the bicentennial of Norwegian emigration to North America, Crossings 200. It is based on the topic of the seminar hosted by the Norwegian-American Historical Association, Norway Chapter (NAHA-Norge) in Ottestad and Hamar June 15-18, 2022.

The first essay in this volume, “Who Sailed on the Restauration?” by Knut Djupedal ties Norwegian-American Essays directly to the bicentennial commemoration of Norwegian emigration in 2025. Djupedal presents the voyage of the Restauration and the pioneers of an organized beginning to the Norwegian mass migration of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In his essay the author has suggested a list of names both for the crew and passengers on the Restauration.

Jørn Brøndal’s essay, Between Pluralism and the Melting Pot: Identity Formation among Danish Immigrants in the United States in the Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries constitutes one of the keynote lectures at the NAHA-Norway conference in 2022. In his essay, Brøndal discusses the interplay between the development of cultural pluralism among Danes on the one hand and the Americanization of Danes according to the concept of the melting pot on the other hand.

Language and culture retention in Norwegian-American communities are central concepts in Joe Salmons’ essay. It is about how and why Norwegian-American communities shifted to English with few heritage speakers born in any of these communities after the 1940s..

Miranda Moen’s essay is about material culture, a field which is rarely studied in Norwegian-American Essays specifically, and in Norwegian-American studies in general. In her essay she examines to what extent regional building customs and socio-economic backgrounds among individuals from the Numedal and Valdres regions in Norway impacted Norwegian traditions in second-generation immigrant-built houses in Spring Grove in Minnesota.

In a comparative study, Daron W. Olson focuses on the two competing journals of the Nordmanns-Forbundet that were published during World War II. The two versions, published in Norway and in the United States, respectively, reveal contrasting ideologies, variations in how the publications treated the war, the symbols they utilized, and their respective long-term objectives.

In her essay, “It’s hard to stop a Trane,” Ann Marie Legreid studies identity retention across several generations in two entrepreneurial families in La Crosse, Wisconsin with Norwegian roots. The Trane family became well known through their enterprise in heating and cooling technologies. The Adolf Gundersen family, on the other hand, pioneered group medical practice in the U.S. and provided medical services with special importance to the Norwegian-American community in the Upper Midwest.

Trond Espen Teigen Bjoland examines May 17 celebrations among Norwegian Americans in Whitewater, Wisconsin, between 1880 and 1940. He studies to which extent these celebrations incorporated both Norwegian and American cultural symbols and the English language throughout the selected time period. Also, the essay reflects how local conditions and broader societal trends could shape cultural practices in immigrant communities.

A comparative study of religious beliefs across religions, cultures, continents, and time is the focus of Kari G. Hempel’s essay. In her essay, Hempel compares two religious congregations, namely the Trinity Lutheran Congregation, a Christian Norwegian immigrant church in Minneapolis, founded in 1870, and the Islamic Cultural Center located in the Sunni Islamic Mosque in Oslo, from 1970.
